In 2023, higher education saw notable rebounds beyond enrollment. The endowment, which had suffered an 8% decline in fiscal year 2022, experienced a significant resurgence, nearly offsetting its losses with a 7.7% increase, according to a report by the National Association of College and University Business Officers and Commonfund (NACUBO-Commonfund).
Among the 20 wealthiest universities, the median endowment stood at $17.1 billion, marking an average rise of 1.9%. Notably, only three institutions surpassed the 7.7% average gain: the University of California System, Johns Hopkins University, and Duke University. Johns Hopkins led with a remarkable 28% increase, followed by the UC system with nearly 15%. Conversely, seven universities experienced declines, with Washington University suffering the most significant drop at -6.4%. Other institutions with losses included Yale, Princeton, and MIT.
Kara D. Freeman, NACUBO President and CEO, stated, “The results of this year’s endowment study are ideal—a sound rate of return demonstrating good fiscal stewardship leading to additional resources for students, faculty, and programs, which are our core mission. Managing endowments in the current financial environment is challenging, but the fiscal year 2023 data shows that our students, donors, and institutions are well served.”
Over the 50 years NACUBO has tracked endowments, its analysis has expanded to 688 institutions, including 15 Canadian ones. In contrast to the top 20, the average endowment among these nearly 700 institutions was $209 million, with about one-third under $100 million.
